Armstrong-Ringsted to reduce staff

10-15 positions to be impacted

As Armstrong-Ringsted moves forward with whole-grade sharing plans with North Kossuth and Sentral school districts for 2012, the district is eyeing reducing its staff by 10-15 teachers.

Armstrong-Ringsted will be host school for the high school.

Sentral will take A-R's and its own K-5 students while North Kossuth will host the middle levels and its own primary grades.

"We're going to have a major reduction of staff," superintendent Randy Collins announced at Monday night's board meeting. Collins attributed the reduction to the whole-grade sharing agreement.

With 10-15 positions to be reduced at $40,000 to $60,000 each, Collins said that would save the district $600,000 to $700,000. Collins said teachers would be notified their contract would not be renewed and board members would receive a sealed envelope with names of those whose contracts not up for renewal.

He said the process would start in March and would have to be concluded by April 30.

"It's probably going to be about a two-month process," Collins said.

Collins said the board will look at teacher licensures and which teachers could teach which courses.

"Morale is not going to be good," Collins admitted, noting that he will talk with the other districts about hiring staff.

"This is a process we set in motion years ago when we started talking about whole-grade sharing," said Jim Boyer, board president.
