Prom a wonderful tradition

May 7, 2012
Estherville Daily News

As far back as people can remember - even further - proms have been a spring tradition.

Originating as a "coming-out party" among the wealthy and Southern gentry, proms have evolved in myriad shapes and forms to become what they are today - a grand affair in which young people dress in their finest tuxes and dresses. Indeed, many people dress better for proms than their weddings.

Over the past few weeks we've seen proms at Estherville Lincoln Central, Armstrong-Ringsted, and most recently, this past Saturday night at Graettinger-Terril.

And these young people were absolutely stunning. Hollywood had absolutely nothing over them. It's too bad there weren't some model or talent agents in the audience.

And what made these young people so attractive is that they cared - they cared about how they looked, they cared about their dates and you could tell they genuinely admired and were proud to be with their partners.

It's that sort of pride in ourselves and in others that's an Iowa and Midwestern hallmark. No, we aren't showy. No, we aren't vain. But when the time comes that we have a chance to pull out all the stops and show people our stuff, our young folks can do it with the best of them.

They showed too that romance isn't dead. It's all alive and well - right here in our midst.

You're a real class act, kids. Thanks for doing us proud.
