Litterbugs mar landscape

June 27, 2012
Estherville Daily News

On Tuesday night, members of the Friends of Fort Defiance braved poison ivy, steep hillsides and treacherous brush to clear away a hillside at the Lovers Leap area on the east side of the park.

They also had to deal with broken bottles and other litter.

That's really a shame, considering that the Friends group is doing work that would normally fall under the auspices of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. As we all know, though, the DNR doesn't have the resources to maintain its parks that it has in the past. That's where groups like the Friends of Fort Defiance come in. And that's why they were clearing away the hillside Tuesday night so people could enjoy nature's beauty.

Unfortunately, it's some of those very people - there to enjoy the gorgeous view - that have been throwing beer and pop cans and bottles and who knows what other kinds of litter down the hillside. While the Friends are doing these people a favor, a few thoughtless individuals are returning the "favor" by littering and making it dangerous for the Friends to work.

This is one of the most beautiful spots in northwestern Iowa. It's a crying shame that these few thoughtless individuals would ruin it for everyone else.

We hope these people somehow find it in their conscience to feel a little guilt the next time they think of chucking a pop can, beer can or other litter over the side of the hill. There are trash cans for litter in the park. Please use them. And don't ruin the park for others.

It's just plain common courtesy and common sense.
