We would like to take this moment to thank our family, friends and the Estherville community for welcoming in our exchange students this year and for prior years. We are truly blessed that our families welcomed these kids in and treated them as members of our family. I know that these kids had some great experiences that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
This year we had Dragica Dimova or "Daci" from Macedonia and Xiaoya Zheng or "Jay" from China. Both kids flew home on June 12 and have resumed their lives. It was tough to say goodbye but we look foward to them visiting us and us getting to go visit them and their families some day. Facebook is great at allowing us to stay in touch daily.
Daci and Jay made some great friends in this community. They also had some really great teachers and coaches that made their year fun. Marlys and Berniece in the office were great whenever they had questions and Mrs. Gerhke was fantastic in helping them everyday, be it homework or a stressful situation.
Hosting a student, or in this year's case, students, is rewarding and at times challenging. But the benefits outweigh the bad times and I encourage other families in the area to host. Frequently we were asked the question of how much money we earn hosting. We don't earn any money hosting. Hosting is done out of the kindness of your heart and actually takes a small financial obligation of your own, ie. utilities go up a little, more groceries used, ect. We are open to speaking to any interested families and helping them contact Shirley Nickel, the local AYUSA rep.
Just an update on our previous students: Jun Sun Lee from South Korea is a few months away from finishing high school and then will attend a University. Cyril "Cisco" Hellwig of Germany is working full time and spending a lot of time with his friends over there.
Again, thank you!
