Distracted driving a real problem

Estherville Daily News

Iowa Lakes Community College students had a lot of laughs when they climbed behind the wheel of a distracted driving simulator Monday in Estherville.

Save a Life Tour by Kramer entertainment had brought the simulator so students could see how hard it is to text and drive - without getting into an accident, of course.

And it was pretty difficult.

All the students seemed to agree, though, that driving while texting - or distracted in any other way - just isn't a good idea.

And the statistics show it.

Most accidents happen when drivers are distracted. It might be driving while texting, changing a radio station, reading or turning around to yell at the kids in the back seat to be quiet. Whatever it is, distracted driving can and does cause accidents.

If you don't believe that, the next time someone pulls out in front of you or runs a stop sign, look at what the driver is doing. Odds are that the driver is either talking on a cell phone or texting.

Drunk driving used to be the big bugaboo that everyone was worried about - and Kramer has a simulator for that too. But distracted driving can be just as bad - if not worse.

That's why the Iowa Legislature passed a law making it illegal to text while driving. And that's a good law.

A lot of employers go beyond that, though, and have a policy that any employee using a cell phone behind the wheel will be immediately terminated.

So why do we put ourselves into positions in which we're driving while distracted?

A lot of it could be our fast-paced society in which we feel the need to multi-task. Whatever the reason, distracted driving is simply a bad idea. More than that, it's a terrible idea.

The next time you get behind the wheel, ask yourself one question - would I want the other drivers around me doing what I'm doing?

And after you answer that question, drive accordingly.
