FORT DODGE - The last three Class 2A state boys cross-country champions have all come from Spirit Lake. That's amazing enough if the feat was accomplished by one or two different runners.

But the Indians did it with three different athletes, the latest coming on Saturday when seniors Will Norris clocked in a time of 15 minutes, 25 seconds at the 2012 meet in Fort Dodge.

That time was faster than his predecessors-Alec Baldwin finished in 16:12 in 2010 and Keith Byers finished the course in 15:36 in 2011.

Norris finished 11 seconds faster than second-place Thomas Pollard of Giibert, a sophomore who completed the course in 15:36.

Third-place Michael Melchert, running on the first-place team from Monticello, finished third in 15:46.

Norris helped lead his team to a seventh-place finish overall with a score of 195 points.

Teammate Tanner Goetsch also earned a medal as he finished 15th in 16:33.

Rounding out the team scoring were Kyle Anderson placed 53rd in 17:42, Jared Brunsvold placed 62nd in 17:54 and Mark Norland placed 64th in 17:55.

Also running for the Indians, Kyle Kueper placed 79th in 18:15 and Alec Harrington placed 94th in 18:49.

Norris and Norland were the only seniors running for the Indians Saturday as they ran in their final high-school competition.
