The Iowa Lakes wrestling team opened its season with a 31-18 win over Minnesota West on Wednesday under first-year head coach Cody Alesch.

"I am glad the team opened up the season with a dual win in front of a great home crowd," said Alesch. "It was good to get the season going the kids have been looking forward to this dual for weeks.

However, the Lakers didn't quite win the way they could have.

"I am surprised we wrestled as undisciplined as we did considering those things but we did," Alesch said. " Maybe we were looking forward to it more then we should have and were over excited, I am not sure. We wrestled sloppy and many mistakes and they cost us tonight in matches that we should have won. The boys need to step back and look at themselves and how they approached there matches and make some adjustments."

Iowa Lakes started the night on the right foot with a sudden victory 4-2 decision by Dylan Konechne over John Bush at 125 pounds.

The Lakers' Dustin Horne received a forfeit at 133 pounds and then Alex Anderson followed with a pin in 4:34 over Matt Manger.

The next three matches went to Minnesota West.

At 149 pounds, Travis Johnson lost 2-1 to Michael Tanner.

At 157, James Smith had an apparently comfortable 15-4 lead heading into the third period when he got caught and lost by fall in 5:37 by Jadon Evans.

At 165, Nate Lawrence also lost by fall to Greg Gainey in 5:18, which tied the match at 15-15.

But the Blue Jays were short a wrestler at 174 as the Lakers took back the lead. Ethan Lindquist then followed with a 10-5 decision over Jerrell Ferguson at 184 pounds.

Former ELC standout Riley Edwards then lost by sudden victory, 3-1 to Taylor Andrews at 197 pounds.

The Lakers finished out the match with Glenn Cothren receiving a forfeit.

Iowa Lakes (1-0) travels to the Cobber Open this Saturday in Moorhead, Minn. The Lakers only other scheduled home dual this season is 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5 against Iowa Western.
