Shop Estherville first this Christmas

November 22, 2012
Estherville Daily News

We've said it before, but we've never meant it more than now. Shopping Estherville for Christmas is probably the best deal you'll find.

For starters, we've had two large brand new stores open this fall. Now think about that. In a town the size of Estherville, that's incredible. Customers now have a bigger and better selection than ever, both at the new stores and at other Estherville retailers that have made a name for themselves for being incredibly competitive.

It's good for the economy too. Just think of how many people from right here in town work in retailing. It's a lot. And the more shopping we do locally, the more jobs we create. That makes more money rolling through our economy.

It really helps our property tax base, too. With a vigorous retail sector, more people want to open businesses, and that creates a larger tax base, taking the burden off other taxpayers.

Not only that, but there's also the revenue generated from the 1-cent sales tax that helps fund Excel! Estherville projects. All those great things that have been happening over the past few years, like facade improvement grants and concerts and beautification? Well, it's that 1-cent tax that's been paying for them. Instead of going to another community and paying THEIR sales tax to help improve THEIR community, we can shop right here at home and help OUR community instead.

And while you're shopping, don't forget that participating Estherville area merchants are offering free matinee movies at the Grand Theatres III at 1031 Central Ave. in Estherville so you'll be able to do that "secret" shopping for the youngsters. Movies will be this Friday and Saturday at noon and 2:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 1, 8, 15 and 22 at noon and 2:30 p.m. and noon only on Sunday, Nov. 25 and Dec. 2, 9, 16 and 23. Just go online to for sponsoring merchant names, free ticket locations and movie titles. Admission is by ticket only with seating limited to capacity.

And while you're shopping, don't forget to dine at Estherville's many great restaurants with a variety of cuisine at amazingly affordable prices.

On top of it, you can avoid having to camp out all night like a street person, fighting with another 1,000 people to be the first in line.

Honestly, folks. When it comes to shopping this Christmas, it just doesn't get any better than Estherville.
