Estherville Lincoln Central's season opening dual against Humboldt was a good measuring stick for the Midgets on Thursday.

ELC still has a ways to go.

In the 2012-13 season, the Midgets will be open in four to five weights most of this season. There also are no seniors in the lineup.

Against Humboldt, ELC won three of the nine contested matches in losing 63-15.

"I like these none-conference matches, because you can't see everything in practice when they're wrestling the same kids every day," said ELC coach Dan Hewitt. "These are good matches to see where they are."

With the night starting at 152 pounds, ELC's first win didn't come until 220 pounds.

Sophomore Chase Bonner scored a five-point move in the first period against Humboldt sophomore Cordes Olthoff. After a scoreless second period, Bonner scored a reversal before finally getting the pin in 5:35.

Junior Oscar Ramirez picked up ELC's next win. Ranked seventh in Class 2A at 126 pounds, Ramirez wrestled at 132 pounds against sophomore Mike Madsen.

He scored two takedowns in the first period to build a 4-1 lead. Then Ramirez started on the bottom in the second period, scored a reversal and two back points before getting the pin in 3:24.

ELC then got the final win of the night at 145 pounds.

Junior Blake Gjerde scored the early takedown against senior Adam Powell. The score was still 2-0 heading into the third period with Gjerde scoring the escape and a takedown and eventually winning 6-2.

At 152, junior Billy Snyder wrestled a tough match against senior Colton Schnetzer. Schnetzer built a 5-2 lead before winning by fall in 5:28.

At 170, junior Trey Trompeter competed in his first varsity match against Adam Mickelson. Mickelson came up with the win by fall in 1:15.

At 182, junior Jacob Bortvit fell behind 5-1 after one period before losing by fall in 2:45.

At 106 pounds, freshman Easton Gifford wrestled his first varsity match. He built a 7-1 lead over freshman opponent Austin Meier and nearly came up with a pin in the first period. But Meier fought back in the second period and earned the win by fall in 3:59.

At 126 pounds, junior Cole Budach trailed 2-1 after the first period and ended up losing by fall in 2:57.

At 138 pounds, Thomas Bortvit fought the entire six minutes in a 7-0 loss by decision.

ELC was open at 113,120, 160, 195 and 285.

The Midgets travel to Jefferson this weekend for a dual tournament with host Jefferson-Scranton-Peyton-Churdan, South Central Calhoun and Norwalk.
