INDIANOLA - The Iowa Lakes Community College wrestling team took eighth place out of 13 teams at the Simpson Invitational on Saturday.
Two Lakers placed in the top six.
Nick Lawrence finished second at 174 pounds with a 4-3 loss to Grandview's Thomas Mooman in the finals.
James Smith placed sixth at 157 pounds.
"We had a day where I thought all the guys wrestled hard except for a few occasions," said Iowa Lakes coach Cody Alesch. "Nick wrestled well all day and was close to capturing his first Title of the year. James wrestled well to start the day then struggled late. James will be moving down to 149 pounds after Christmas and that will be good for him."
Alesch said Glenn Cothren also wrestled well at heavyweight for the Lakers.
"Glenn has improved greatly over the last few weeks and was one match from placing on Saturday," said Alesch. Glenn is moving down to 197 so he is very undersized at heavyweight but when he gets to 197 after Christmas it will pay off big for him.
"We still need to pick up our intensity and get better everyday as we move into our last week of competition before Christmas break," said Alesch.
Iowa Lakes hosts Iowa Western on Wednesday
The Lakers will host fifth-ranked Iowa Western at 7 p.m., Wednesday.
This is the last home meet of the season for the Lakers and should be well worth the trip to the gym.
"We have two individuals ranked in the top 12 of their respective weight classes and Iowa Western will bring in eight," said Alesch.
This Saturday, the Lakers travel to the Dick Walker Invite in Waverly before a long break that Coach Alesch said is needed.
We have had several injuries early and are trying to get healthy," he said. "After this weekend we have Christmas break which will give us the time to get healthy before we return and compete at the National Duals in Springfield, Ill. in early January."
