Although the Iowa Lakes women lost their first home game of the season on Saturday, the Lakers fought to the end.

They rallied from an 19-point deficit before losing by seven, 61-54, to Northeast Community College.

The Lakers struggled getting their offense going in the first half, but trailed just 19-16 after a basket by Leah Courtney with 4:09 on the clock.

Then the visitors' Andrea Johnson hit a 3-pointer, which started a 10-2 run to end the half as the Lakers trailed 29-18 at the break.

Northeast gradually built a 19-point lead and the Lakers struggled to stay even. That was still the visitors' advantage with about 5 minutes left in the game, 27-38 when Courtney converted a three-point play to start a 10-0. The run included free throws from Myangel Johnson, Sunday Duop, Courtney and Daria Johnson to get within 57-48.

But the hosts will get no closer until Shebreka Edwards hit the final shot of the game.

Courtney led the Lakers with 19 points while Duop finished with 12, Edwards had 11, Johnson had nine, Jones had two and Carla Barrera had one. Courtney had a team-high 10 rebounds and Jones had four assists.

Northeast shot 19-for-46 from the field for 41.3 percent, including 7-for-14 from 3-point range. They also were 16-for-19 from the free throw line.

The Lakers shot 17-for-49 from the field for 34.7 percent, but were just 2-for-7 from 3-point range. They were 18-for-27 from the free throw line.

Iowa Lakes (4-9 overall) is on the road against Southwestern this evening. The Lakers' next home game is Jan. 5 vs. DMACC.
