Midgets return to the mats tonight

Estherville Lincoln Central wrestlers take to the mats tonight for the first time in the New Year at Spencer.

In a Lakes Conference double dual, the Class 2A fifth-ranked Tigers host the Midgets and Cherokee.

Through the first half of the season, junior Oscar Ramirez has led the Midgets with a 12-0 record while wrestling at 132 pounds. He is ranked sixth at 126 pounds in Class 2A, where he is expected to wrestle later in the season.

Other ELC wrestlers with winning records are juniors Billy Snyder (152) at 10-5, Blake Gjerde (145) at 9-5 and sophomore Chase Bonner (220) at 10-5.

Also, junior Thomas Bortvit is 8-8 on the season, wrestling mostly at 138 pounds.

ELC has been short in at least five weights at most meets this past season while opening with a 1-7 record.

Cherokee enters the contest with a 4-4 dual record while Spencer is 9-0.

The Tigers feature six ranked wrestlers in their lineup-Trevor Streuli, seventh at 113 pounds; Bailey Hawn, ninth at 120 pounds; John Christopherson, fifth at 126 pounds; Levi Gilmore, third at 132 pounds; Tanner Schaefer, first at 160 pounds; and Blaine Johnson, eighth at 170 pounds.

The Midgets travel to the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Tournament this Saturday and have a non-conference double dual with Algona and Okoboji next Tuesday. Saturday, Jan. 12, the Midgets host a home double dual tournament with Spirit Lake Park, Bishop Heelan, Forest City, Linn-Mar, and Blue Earth, Minn.
