ELC earns second dual win

No. 5 Spencer too much for Midgets

SPENCER - Open at five weights, Estherville Lincoln Central needed every point it could get in defeating Cherokee 40-39.

The Midgets got a key pin from Jacob Bortvit at 170 pounds and a major decision from Billy Snyder at 152 played a key role in the win.

In the nightcap, Class 2A No. 5 Spencer had too much for the Midgets in winning 57-20.

The win against Cherokee featured six contested matches. Earning pins were Oscar Ramirez (132), Jacob Bortvit (170) and Chase Bonner (220).

Ramirez defeated Christian Lundy in 1:03; Bortvit earned his pin in 1:56 over Mason Meitzenheimer and Bonner won in 33 seconds over Alex Sordrager.

Snyder's earned a key 10-2 decision over Blake Booth. He took a 9-0 lead before giving up a late reversal. The escape made the difference in giving ELC four points instead of three.

In the other two contested matches, Thomas Bortvit (138) battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to tie the match at 6-6 late in the third period. But in overtime, Andy Hicks came up with a takedown and two back points to earn the win.

At 106 pounds, East Gifford lost by fall to Drake Bechtal in 2:47.

Joel McCoy (113), Cole Budach (120) and Blake Gjerde (145) all received forfeits for ELC while the Midgets forfeited at 126, 160, 180, 195 and 285 pounds.

The Spencer vs. ELC match featured eight contested matches with the Midgets winning four of them.

Bonner had the only pin for the Midgets as he won in 44 seconds.

In the feature match of the night, Ramirez, ranked sixth at 126 pounds, defeated Spencer's Levi Gilmore by major decision 16-6. Gilmore is ranked third at 132 pounds.

Gjerde earned a 10-1 major decision at 145 pounds and Snyder pinned his opponent at 152 pounds in 5:47.

Gifford (106), Budach (120), Thomas Bortvit (138) and Jacob Bortvit (170), all lost by fall to the Tigers.

ELC returns to action this Saturday at the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Tournament in Graettinger.
