NEWELL - Jumping out to a 17-4, first-quarter lead, Class 3A No. 3 Estherville Lincoln Central appeared completely in control against Class 1A No. 3 Newell-Fonda.
But the Midgets had a scoring lull at the end of the first half and the start of the second as the Mustangs battled to within four, 39-35.
ELC responded by going inside in the final quarter.
Allie Sievert had 10 of her 16 points in the final frame and Emily Kirchner had seven of her team-high 17 points in the period as ELC won 60-47.
"They're a good team and they made a good run," said ELC coach Tony Klein of the Mustangs. "We just didn't shoot well during that stretch."
Sievert did the job from the free throw line in the final frame where she was 6-for-6.
Kirchner did much of her scoring in the opening quarter as she had eight points. Casey Sievert also had five points in the period with Sara Heywood scoring two and Maggie McCauley scoring a runner at the buzzer.
ELC scored the first two baskets of the second quarter before the Mustangs went on a 7-0 run. McCauley ended the drought with her second basket and Dahl hit a 3-pointer to put ELC ahead 26-11. But Newell-Fonda converted a three-point play before half to cut the deficit to 26-14.
Both teams shot well from the foul line as the Midgets were 17-for-18 and Newell-Fonda was 16-for-19.
Both Sievert and Kirchner had seven rebounds.
Heywood finished with 13 points while Dahl and Casey Sievert each had five and McCauley had four.
ELC (12-1 overall) takes on Class 2A No. 1 Western Christian this evening in Hull. The Wolfpack is undefeated at 14-0. Neither team has a conference loss yet.
