Midgets finish second at Hayfield Tourney

Ramirez, Gjerde win own brackets

HAYFIELD, Minn. - Traveling to Hayfield, Minn., this past weekend to face some different wrestlers, Estherville Lincoln Central wasn't quite sure what to expect.

But the Midgets wrestled well enough to eke out a second-place finish with two champions-Oscar Ramirez (132) and Blake Gjerde (145) and 127 points.

Leston-Aultura/Rushford-Peterson took first with 198 points while Medford placed third with 10 1/2 points, host Hayfield was fourth with1 17 points, Waseca had 104 points and Grand Meadow/Leroy Ostrander/Kingland had 73 points.

We didn't go in expecting a trophy, but he had a couple kids that exceeded expectations," said ELC coach Dan Hewitt. "We also wrestled some good kids and had some tough losses."

Ramirez didn't have any trouble with his two opponents as he pinned GMLOK's Blake Olson in 1:32 and Waseca's Jackson Killion in 40 seconds.

Gjerde also had a pair of pins as he beat LARP's Gabe Daley in 2:32 and hayfield's Dylan Ardnt in 3:47.

At 160 pounds, Grant Lausen was ELC's lone second place finish. He pinned Medford's Nick Von Ruden in 3:13, but then lost to LARP's Jordan Thaede by technical fall, 23-7. Thaede is ranked third in his weight class and division in Minnesota.

Cole Budach (120) and Billy Snyder (152) both placed third and were 1-1 on the day. Budach lost by fall to Hayfield's Issac Wangen in 1:51, but won a 2-0 decision over Medford's Marcus Deleon. Snyder lost to eighth-ranked Tucker Spletz of LARP, but then won an 8-2 decision over Hayfield's Connor Nelson.

Joel McCoy (113), Thomas Bortvit (138) and Chase Bonner (220) all placed fourth. McCoy had a 0-2 record while Bortvit and Bonner both were 2-2.

Bortvit won a 7-4 decision over LARP's Ryan Flathers and pinned Medford's Jacob Von Ruden in 5:56. But then he lost by fall to GMLOK's parker Hale in 3:51 and Hayfield's Mason Moreno in 1:47.

Bonner pined Hayfield's Trey Chapmen in 39 seconds and then lost by fall to Medford's Nathan Elzen, ranked eighth, in the semifinals. In the consolation, he pinned LARP's Jordan Bergan in 57 seconds, but then lost by fall to Waseca's Jacob Claybaugh in 3:24 in the third-place match.

Easton Gifford (106 was 2-2 on the day and placed fifth. Jake Bortvit (170) was 0-2 on the day and also placed fifth. Bortvit had to wrestle one top-10 ranked wrestler in Waseca's Zachary Gehloff.

Gifford had two pins on the day-both against Waseca's Noah Schmidt.

ELC travels to LeMars on Friday for the Lakes Conference Wrestling Tournament. Action begins at 5 p.m.
