IDA GROVE - Doug Miner and Zach Skopec both were crowned champions for Class 2A 10th-ranked Spirit Lake as the Indians finished sixth at the at the Herb Ingrens Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at OA-BCIG High School.
Miner, ranked first at 120 pounds in Class 2A and a defending state champion, recorded four pins in the tournament, the first three all under a minute. In the finals, he pinned Woodbury Central's Gable Verschoor in 4:22.
Skopec, ranked fourth at 138 pounds, had two pins and a major decision and won the finals 9-5 against Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Steve Garcia in the finals.
Kenten Murray (145) and David Trucksess (152) both placed third. Murray, ranked 10th, went 4-1, winning the third place match with a 5-3 decision over Akron-Westfield's Cole Oltmans.
Trucksess, ranked ninth, lost by fall in the second round to 10th-ranked Brett Tomoson of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, but pinned three other opponents before receiving and finished 5-1 in the tournament.
Javier Tapia (170) and Brady Mart (195) both posted 2-2 records in the tournament. Justin Jones (160) and Jacob Jenness (182) both went 1-3 while Gage Roberts (106) was 1-2 and Ben Parks (126) went 0-2.
The Indians finished with 127 points, just ahead of Emmetsburg who finished with 119.
Spirit Lake takes on Okoboji in a dual meet Thursday before traveling to LeMars for the Lakes Conference Meet on Friday.
Titans finish 15th
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire finished 15th overall at the tournament with 71 points.
Austin Thompson finished in fourth place at 126 pounds while Alex Hoffman (113) and Cody Thompson (285) both finished sixth.
The Titans are at Garner tonight.
