DES MOINES - Spirit Lake Park's Doug Miner picked up his third state wrestling title Saturday while teammate Zach Skopec finished third as the Indians wrapped up their season.

On his way to the final, Miner's key wins were over third-ranked Charlie Jones of Waterloo Columbus and sixth-ranked Brady Jennings of Osage in the Class 2A 120-pound weight bracket.

In Saturday's final, the second-ranked SLP wrestler faced fourth-ranked Shadow Leshen of Albia. Leshen had edged top-ranked Leighton Gaul of New Hampton, 3-1 in Friday's semifinal.

Miner scored the only point of the match with an escape in the second period. Leshen chose neutral to start the third period and couldn't score against Miner, who held on for the 1-0 victory.

"I wasn't surprised (he chose neutral) at all because he is good on his feet and I knew that coming in," Miner said. "I just worked and wrestled smart and came out with the win."

Miner finishes a 44-4 senior season and has 165 career victories with both of his past championships coming at 106 pounds.

Wrestling at 138 points, Skopec, ranked second lost his semifinal match on Friday to fifth-ranked Adam Staudt.

In Saturday's consolation semifinals, he edged sixth-ranked Steven Garcia of Sergeant Bluff-Luton 1-0.

In the third-place match, he caught third-ranked Eric Clarke of Davenport Assumption in the second period and the pin came in 2:46.

Skopec ends his junior season with a 49-3 record.
