Today Spay Day

February 25, 2013
Estherville Daily News

Today, the last Tuesday of February, is Spay Day USA, a time to remind ourselves of the need to spay and neuter pets to prevent the proliferation of unwanted animals that will only face an uncertain and cruel fate.

Certainly, there are those who don't want to spay or neuter their pets - professional animal breeders, for instance. But most pet owners don't plan on breeding animals and dealing with the complications that can result.

Spaying and neutering should be just as natural a part of pet ownership as giving their vaccinations. In fact, that's a good time to do it - when pets are vaccinated.

And while we're at it, instead of looking for purebred or "designer" breeds for pets, maybe we should look to animal shelters - such as the Emmet County Animal Shelter - for your next pet. These pets are deserving of a good home, and they make great companions.

For more information, go online to emmetcountyanimalshelter.org or call (712) 209-8841 and see if they have a pet with which you can fall in love. They have a pet foster program too, in which you can adopt an animal while the search is on for a new owner.

And who knows. Maybe you'll decide to adopt the pet yourself.

And make a friend for life.
