John G. Nelson, 71, formerly of Estherville, died in Iowa City on Feb. 27, 2013. Born on Dec. 14, 1941, in Rockford, Ill. John graduated from East High School, received a BA from Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant, and continued his education earning a M.S. from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
After graduating from college John worked for Iowa Wesleyan as an Admissions Counselor and lived in La Grange Park, Ill. In 1966 he worked for Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio as Assistant to the Dean of Admissions. In 1970 he worked for Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio, as Director of Admissions. In 1977 he began work at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, where he retired as Director of Admissions in 2002.
John and Sue Rarick were married in May 1988 and resided in Estherville until 2011. John was president of Estherville Area Arts Council, Chair of Emmet County Democrats, first President of the Patrons of the Fine Arts, Estherville High School, and a member of the Iowa Association of College Admissions Counseling.
John is survived by his wife Sue, daughters: Linnea (Tom) Nicol, Jennifer (Chris) Solberg, Jennifer (Matt) Henderson, son, David Rarick, and six grandchildren, John, Madeline, Bryan, Rachel, Alex, and Grant. John is also survived by his former spouse Dianne Bostic.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert and Hilda Nelson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to: Respite Angels Estherville, Iowa and Emmet County Community Foundation Estherville, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at Henry-Olson Funeral Home in Estherville, March 20, 2013. The family will greet friends from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for coffee. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Private burial at Oak Hill Cemetery will follow the service.
