VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Iowa Lakes baseball team completed its spring break trip last week with a 4-6 record in Vero Beach, Fla.
The Lakers opened their trip on Friday, March 15 against the Ontario Blue Jays with a 20-6 victory. The Lakers pounded out 16 hits and scored nine runs in the fourth and seven in the sixth.
Malduino Gonzalez was 3-4 with two RBIs while Edison Perez was 3-3 with two RBIs. Also Miguel Rosario was 2-4 with an RBI.
Jesus Brito pitched five innings in the win. He gave up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Iowa Lakes took on Ontario again on March 16 and lost 7-4. This time, the Lakers had just six hits. Edwin Torres was 2-4 with two RBIs. Jordan Petschke took the loss. In six innings, he gave up eight runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Also on March 16, the Lakers won 9-5 over Miami University Hamilton. Alcides Fuguet earned the win as he gave up five runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
The Lakers pounded out nine hits. Kevin Arroyo was 2-3 with three RBIs, Leonardo Ramirez was 2-3 with two RBIs.
The Lakers suffered two losses on Sunday, March 17.
The first was 4-3 in eight innings to Massasoit Community College.
The Lakers had seven hits from seven different players. Steve Kandborg had two RBIs on his one hit and Gonzalez drove in the other run on his hit. Chaday Figueroa pitched five innings and gave up three runs on six hits with one strikeout. But Christian Torrech took the loss as he gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk in 2/3 inning of play.
The Lakers then lost 1-0 to Riverland Community College.
Iowa Lakes had four hits in the contest led by Edison Perez, who was 2-3. Jonathan Brinez pitched six innings and gave up one run on two hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
On Monday, March 18, the Lakers suffered two more losses.
The first was another one-run contest, 5-4, against the Canadian Baseball Academy. Tyler Von Hatten took the loss as he gave up two runs on two hits with a walk in one inning of work. Drew Aldeen pitched four innings, giving up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Lakers had 10 hits. Perez, O'Melia and Elvin Nunez each went 2-3. Nunez, Ramirez and Tanner Johnson each had an RBI.
The Lakers then lost 11-6 to Westchester Community College. Austin Smith pitched three innings and took the loss. He gave up seven runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks. Perez pitched three innings giving up three runs on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Iowa Lakes had six hits. Perez and Gonzalez each went 2-4. Steve Kandborg was 1-4 with two RBIs.
The Lakers got back in the win column on Tuesday, March 19.
The Lakers defeated Massasoit 9-1. Jesus Brito earned the win as he gave up one run in six innings with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings of work. Christian Torrech pitched two innings and gave up three hits with two strikeouts.
The Lakers pounded out 12 hits. Gonzalez was 3-3 with a double, Miguel Rosario was 3-4 with an RBI and Arroyo was 2-4 with three RBIs.
The Lakers then lost to University of Connecticut at Avery Point 7-4. Fuguet took the loss as he gave up seven runs on eight hits with one strikeout in five innings of work. The Lakers had seven hits. Ramirez was 2-3 and O'Melia was 2-4 with an RBI. Torres, Gonzalez and arroyo each had an RBI.
The Lakers ended the spring trip with an 8-4 win over the Connecticut school on Wednesday, march 20. Petschke pitched four innings in the contest, giving up one run on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Perez closed out the final three innings and gave up three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Iowa Lakes (6-6 overall) had its games against Ellsworth canceled this past weekend. The Lakers will travel to Cedar Rapids this weekend to face Kirkwood with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
