EMMETSBURG - Entering Thursday's Class 2A state qualifying meet, Estherville Lincoln Central's Caitlyn Clayton was nearly assured of a return trip to the state meet.

Of the competitors she and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura's Dasiana Larson had thrown over 36 feet.

The first and second place winners in each event automatically qualify for the state meet.

Larson has the best throw in Class 2A this season at 42 feet, 1/2 inch. She won the event Thursday with a throw of 40 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

Clayton, who threw 41 feet, 2 1/2 inches at Monday's Lakes Conference meet didn't have her best. However her throw of 37 feet, 3 1/2 inches placed her solidly in second.

The next closest throw was 35 feet.

ELC didn't have any other immediate qualifiers. Alicia Jorgenson finished third in the 200-meter dash in 28.8 seconds.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Jorgenson, Brianna Enerson, Kayla Jensen and Taylor Greig finished fourth.
