Students deserving of Service Above Self Awards

May 9, 2013
Estherville Daily News

"We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future."

-Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Roosevelt's statement couldn't be any more appropriately applied than to eight Estherville Lincoln Central juniors honored by the Estherville Rotary Club Thursday in the club's seventh annual Service Above Self Awards. Special recognition went to Heather Natterstad.

"Emmet County and Estherville is fantastic," guest speaker Gene Haukoos told the juniors, their parents, Rotarians and guests who were present. "Money is never a problem."

An exemplary example of that would be the annual Emmet County Relay for Life in which Emmet County consistently ranks among the top in the country in per capita giving.

It's volunteers, though, that make the wheels work.

"Sweet Corn Days could not happen without groups and other volunteers," said Haukoos, who also pointed to the Emmet County Wellness Coalition forming as a clearinghouse for volunteers throughout the county.

Juniors recognized Thursday were:

n Heather Natterstad (special recognition).

n Billy Snyder.

n Chris Seylar.

n Becca Lair.

n Alicia Jorgenson.

n Rachel Bates.

n Tia Bernholtz.

n Kayla Evans.
