Summer reading program great for kids, great for anyone

May 28, 2013
Estherville Daily News

From June 3 through July 13, anyone from infants through adults will have the chance to participate in the Estherville Public Library's summer reading program - Dig into Reading.

What's so great about this program is that it motivates kids to continue reading through the summer - not only maintaining but improving on the reading skills they've learned during the school year.

And that's important. During school, kids read what they 'have' to read. But in the summer, it's different. Now is the time when they can grab those books - fiction or nonfiction - that they've been hearing about all year but haven't had the time to read yet. And what a wonderful way for them to improve on the reading skills they've learned through the year.

If your child isn't able to participate in the summer reading program here or elsewhere, it's still a good idea to stock up with a good selection of books from your local library. And if you have an e-reader like a Kindle or Nook, they have books you can borrow for those, too.

Adults, too, can benefit from reading as well.

In a recent interview on public television, Bill Gates told how he studies as many different areas as he can so he can look at the world from as many perspectives as possible. And it must have worked. Look at how it paid off for him.

So let's all get into the reading habit this summer. Whether it's in a cabin with a crackling fireplace and rain on the roof (like just recently) or reading on the beach, reading is probably the best way you can feed your mind this summer.

Your mind will appreciate it.
