Relay for Life impressive, moving

June 3, 2013
Estherville Daily News

Emmet County Relay for Life raised $84,500 toward the fight against cancer as of Saturday, a statistic that has to be moving in anyone's book.

To put that number into perspective, it's nearly $10 for every man, woman and child living in Emmet County.

Equally impressive is that the amount was raised in what seems to be a persistently tight economy.

What's so wonderful about the Relay for Life locally is that it's a celebration - a celebration of those who have fought cancer and won and a celebration of our memories of those who have passed on from cancer. It's also a celebration that a cure for cancer is coming closer every day.

A lot of great people pitched in to help in this year's Relay - just like they do every year. They included people who help set up and tear down, people who raised money throughout the year, team captains who made sure their people were the "boots on the ground" to help raise money, entertainers who kept people's spirits in a celebratory mood despite threatening weather through Saturday and people who helped organize, cajole and persuade others to help.

Mother and daughter Marj Pytleski and Kay Dahl were exemplary honorary survivors. Their spirit and enthusiasm never waned. They showed the true spirit of survivorship.

If you didn't get the chance to participate in this year's Relay for Life, plans are well under way for the 2014 Relay for Life. So if you know someone who has fought and won the battle against cancer - or who has passed on because of it - why not get into the fight and join a team for next year's Relay.

What better way to honor your loved one's memory.
