Spirit Lake pulls away from Spencer

The Spirit Lake softball team went 2-3 this past weekend starting at the Sheldon Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Indians lost 14-1 in five innings to Sioux Center then defeated Sheldon 8-7 on Friday. On Saturday, at George, the Indians lost 3-2 to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and 12-5 to George-Little Rock/Central Lyon.

Spirit Lake returned to Lakes Conference play on Monday where they defeated Spencer 7-4. The Indians are 3-0 to start conference play.

At home versus Spencer , the Indians broke away with a three-run fifth inning and held off a late Tiger rally.

Newman earned the win as she struck out six batters, walked six and gave up four hits.

The Indians had 10 hits with Thate going 2-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Krause and Hayley Roberts each went 2-3 and Newman was 2-4.

Spirit Lake (6-5 overall) hosts LeMars this evening.

On Friday, Spirit Lake had seven hits against Sioux Center but gave up 11. Alissa Christoffer had the only multiple-hit game as she went 3-3.

Paige Krause, Maddie Richter and Carly Ites combined to give up 14 earned runs on 11 hits with eight walks and two strikeouts.

Against Sheldon, the Indians fell behind 3-1, scored three runs in the third inning and won a seesaw battle.

Krause earned the win as she pitched six innings and gave up six hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Spirit Lake had eight hits as Christoffer was 2-4 and Mackenzie Thate was 2-2 with two RBIs. Hayley Roberts was 1-1 with two RBIs.

On Saturday, Spirit Lake and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley both scored two runs in the first inning of their game. The score remained tied until BHRV scored a run in the bottom of the sixth for the lead and the win.

Bailee Newman took the loss and struck out three batters, walked six and gave up two hits.

Spirit Lake had six hits, one each by Christoffer, Carter Hassel, Whitley Kafton, Newman, Thate and Kayla Herrig.

Against George-Little Rock/Central Lyon, Spirit Lake was down 12-1 before scoring four runs in the fifth.

Krause, Paige Petersen and Newman combined to give up just four hits, but had 13 walks with just three strikeouts.

The Indians again had six hits with Thate blasting two home runs as she went 2-2 with three RBIs. Roberts was 2-3 also and Christoffer and Herrig each had one hit.
