ELC erases 3-1 deficit

EMMETSBURG - Trailing 3-1 after five innings, Estherville Lincoln Central outscored Emmetsburg 6-1 over the final two winnings go secure a 7-4 win on Monday.

While the Midgets had four hits in the final two innings, they also had some help from the E'Hawks who committed four errors over that time span.

In the sixth inning, Emily Kirchner reached base on an error and Liz Brashear drew a walk. A double by Caitlyn Clayton scored both runs. Clayton tried to go to third on the play, but was tagged out, but the game was tied at 3-3.

Kristen King’s leadoff single in the top of the seventh led to this go-ahead run as she scored on a hit by Carson Gjerde to give the Estherville Lincoln Central a 4-3 lead over Emmetsburg. The Midgets scored three more insurance runs in the inning and won 7-4.

In the top of the seventh, Kristen King led off with a single and went to second on the sacrifice bunt by Macy Dahl. A passed ball allowed her to reach third and Carson Gjerde singled in the go-ahead run.

After a walk to Kirchner, Gjerde was tagged out trying to steal third base. But Brashear drew a walk and Clayton singled in another run. The E'Hawks then committed consecutive errors as ELC took a 7-3 lead.

Emmetsburg didn't go down quietly as they loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. ELC took the force at home plate for the first out and then took the out at second on another grounder to short as one run scored. Another walk allowed Emmetsburg to load the bases, but a fly by to Dahl at second base ended the game.

ELC fell behind 1-0 in the first inning and tied the game in the top of the fourth as Clayton reached on an error and scored on a single by Jensen.

The E'Hawks retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two runs.

Brashear earned the win as she gave up nine hits while striking out eight batters and walking three.

At the plate, Clayton was 2-4 with three RBIs and Jensen was 2-4 with an RBI. Kirchner and King each were 1-3 while Gjerde was 1-4 with an RBI.

ELC (8-5 overall) travels to LeMars on Wednesday.

The Estherville Lincoln Central Junior Varsity lost 8-6 to Emmetsburg.

Megan Jensen took the loss as she pitched five innings, gave up eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

At the plate, Jerica Walters was 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Jordan Phillips was 2-3 with a double and two runs. Colleen Humble was 1-2 with two doubles.
