Estherville Lincoln Central took an early lead and then hung on for a 4-3 victory over rival Spirit Lake on Wednesday.

The Midgets jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings and recorded the final two outs after the Indians plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

"The key was to get a led instead of playing from behind," said ELC coach Lee Evans.

Billy Snyder earned the win as he gave up five hits with three walks and one hit batter.

"Billy's change up was working and he was spotting up on his fastball," said Evans.

Snyder also helped his own cause with some key work at the plate. He reached on an error in the bottom of the first inning with Alec Wycoff coming in as a courtesy runner. Adam Reiter then laid down a bunt which Spirit Lake bobbled allowing both runners to stay safely. A passed ball allowed the runners to move into scoring position. Derek Nieland hit a chopper through the left side of the infield to score Wycoff. Reiter rounded third hard and was tagged out when he couldn't get back to the bag.

But Matt Burrell followed with an RBI double as ELC led 2-0.

Spirit Lake got one run back in the top of the second. Reese Salmon, Nic Wetzler and Cole Thate all singled to load the bases. With one out, Tony Eckert brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to center. But Snyder recorded his only strikeout of the night to get the third out.

ELC added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Reiter led off with a walk and one-out later, Burrell sent a shot over the left-field fence.

"That was the farthest home run I've seen out of here,' said coach Evans.

Snyder recorded the first out of the seventh with a pop up, but then gave up two walks. Burrell entered in relief and after a two-run error off a grounder by Paul Brown, the ELC senior got Nic Amudson to fly out to right field and struck out Salmon to earn the save.

ELC finished with nine hits off Wetzler. Burrell was 2-2 with three RBI and Nieland was 1-2 with an RBI. Snyder was 2-3 with a double, Reiter and Tyler Swanson each went 1-2 and Tucker Milburn and Corey Reeves each were 1-3.

For Spirit Lake, Brandon Stoll was 1-2; Wetzler, Nile Skogerboe and Thate each were 1-3 and Salmon was 1-4.

ELC (8-11 overall) is on the road against Central Lyon this evening.

Spirit Lake (12-4 overall) hosts Storm Lake on Friday.

The ELC Junior Varsity won 6-2 over Spirit Lake.

Austin Egeland pitched seven innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

At the plate, Jake Bortvit was 2-3; Carsten Bosch was 1-2 with an RBI; Blake Gjerde was 1-2 with a double; Egeland was 1-3 with a double and two RBIs; Alec Wycoff was 1-3; Tim Greving was 1-2 with a double; Cole Budach was 1-2 and Hunter King was 1-2 with two RBI.
