‘Heroes Behind The Badges’ blood drive set

Emmet County Sheriff Department and Estherville Fire Department will be competing to see who can recruit the most blood donors for the community's blood supply in the sixth annual "Heroes Behind the Badges" blood drive.

The "friendly competition" between the departments will be held at Avera Holy Family Hospital on Tuesday, July 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The public is encouraged to come in to donate and designate their donation to the department of their choice. All donors will receive a special commemorative t-shirt and the satisfaction of knowing you helped save a life this summer. The department credited with the most blood donations will receive a trophy and bragging rights for a year. All blood types are in need.

"The summer is the most challenging time of the year for the community's blood supply", states Ken Versteeg, executive director, Community Blood Bank. "We truly need people to donate blood at this blood drive to help keep the blood supply at adequate levels to be used to treat patients' in need. We encourage first-time donors as well as those that have donated multiple times."

Donors must be 17 years of age or older (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health the day of the blood drive. Please bring an ID.

It is recommended to eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood. For more information or to make an appointment please call 362-6456. Walk-ins are welcome.
