Indians season ends with loss to Warriors

SIOUX CENTER - Spirit Lake's season came to an end with a 5-2 loss to Sioux Center in the first round of a Class 3A Region 1 game.

The two teams had met three times during the regular season with Sioux Center winning twice.

The Warriors (20-10) again struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth.

Spirit Lake (18-17) got one run back as Mackenzie Thate hit a one-out double and Carly Ites and Hayley Roberts followed with consecutive singles.

But the Indians' threat ended when Kayla Herrig lined out to third base and Ites was doubled up at second.

Sioux Center added three runs in the top of the fifth inning including a two-run home run by Megan Cleveringa.

Spirit Lake threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but Sioux center's defense held on, making a play at the plate and getting a groundout to end the threat.

In the top of the seventh, the Indians sent in Haley Johnson to pinch hit and she reached on an error. Two pop-ups later, Bailee Newman singled and Paige Krause followed with an RBI double to score Johnson.

Representing the tying run, Mackenzie Thate stepped to the plate, but grounded out to third.

Newman took the loss. She pitched seven innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

For Sioux Center, Cleveringa gave up two runs (one earned) on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk.

At the plate for Spirit Lake, Ites was 2-2, Thate was 2-4, Roberts was 1-2 and Alissa Christoffer, Newman and Krause all went 1-4.
