Emmet County residents now have a new wellness alternative.
Jackie Mart, holistic nutritionist and lifestyle coach, has opened Optimum Wellness LLC at 1119 Central Ave. in the Center For Chiropractic Wellness building.
Mart, a Terril High School graduate, received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from the University of Northern Iowa. She later completed an online program through the Global College of Natural Medicine. She now finds herself more of an educator than ever.
"I'm still educating people," said Mart.
For Mart, it all started when she picked up the book, Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You To Know About by Kevin Trudeau. She was so fascinated by what she learned that she went online to learn more.
What she discovered was a key to an entirely different holistic lifestyle. That motivated her to volunteer as a member services director at a food co-op in Carroll where she was living at the time.

"My outlook on life and health after that was different than it ever was before," Mart said.
Mart found jobs in Minneapolis teaching exercise classes and working in a health food store. The opportunity came to start up in business for herself as Optimum Wellness LLC, now located in Estherville.
"I feel like people here want to be healthy. They just don't know how," said Mart. She said people seeking weight loss need an accountability partner and Mart stresses "count chemicals, not calories."
"I teach people how to live a holistic lifestyle," Mart said.
Mart is offering a nutritionist-led grocery store tour at Hy-Vee at 1221 Central Ave. in Estherville 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31. The cost of the tour is $25 each or two for $40. Participants will learn about heart-healthy foods and recipes and hidden sources of sugar in their diet that lead to inflammation, bloating, disease, cancer and weight gain. They'll also learn how to read food labels and what toxic foods and hidden ingredients to avoid. There will be complimentary gift bags with organic produce from Hy-Vee for every attendee.
Mart said there are eight food additives commonly found in food in the US that are banned in other countries. For weight loss, she encourages "foods by God, not by man" and encourages shoppers to focus on the perimeter of the grocery store.
In the tour, she will show participants how to pick out foods that are healthy with the ultimate goal to help people be in charge of their own health.
The tour is limited to 10 participants. To make a reservation, call Mart at (712) 790-5883 or e-mail her at Jackie@OptimumWellnessMN.com.
