BANCROFT - North Union wrapped up its regular season with a sweep of West Fork in a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Warriors (23-8 overall) finished the season by winning 12 of their final 13 games.
In the first game against West Fork, North Union broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth inning.
Sawyer Doocy led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice by Spencer Ricke and scored on a single by Garrett Johnson. Johnson went to second on an error by the left fielder and to third on a passed ball. After Alex Deitering drew a walk, Johnson scored on a bunt by Brandon Kollasch. Jake Govern followed with an RBI single to score Deitering.
North Union finished with eight hits. Johnson was 2-2 with an RBI. Deitering was 1-1 with an RBI; Kollasch and Govern each were 1-3 with an RBI; Jake Adams and Doocy both were 1-3 and Cody Runksmeier were 1-4.
Runksmeier earned the win on the mound. In seven innings, he gave up one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
The Warriors won the second game 10-5. After taking a 6-2 lead in the first inning, North Union steadily added to its lead. West Fork tried to rally in the seventh, but managed just two runs for the final score.
Johnson earned the win as he pitched six innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Kollasch closed out the game giving up two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and no walks.
North Union pounded out 14 hits led by Doocy, who went 3-3 with three RBI. Runksmeier was 3-5 with an RBI while Kollasch was 2-4 with three RBIs. Also Adams was 2-4 with an RBI, Johnson was 1-3 with an RBI; Deitering was 1-2; Ricke was 1-3 and Govern was 1-4.
North Union has a first-round bye in the Class 2A District 2 Tournament bracket. The Warriors await the winner of Saturday's first-round game between Estherville Lincoln Central and Sioux Central. The second-round game will be played at 5 p.m. in Spirit Lake on Tuesday, July 16
