Sweet Corn Days turns sweet 16

Annual event is Aug. 1-4

If you thought Sweet Corn Days was sweet, then it will be a whole lot sweeter when it turns sweet 16 this Aug. 1-4.

Following is a day-by-day schedule of events.

Thursday, Aug. 1

Downtown Market - Sponsored by the Excel! Estherville Arts & Culture Committee, the Downtown Market meets every Thursday during the summer from 5-7 p.m. in Library Square. You'll find scrumptious baked goods, beautiful jewelry and handmade goods, keepsakes and other mementos.

Presentation of the flames - Black Knights Car Club members will escort runners from the four Estherville entrance signs to Library Square for the Presentation of the Flames at 5:30 p.m. At 5:35, a bonfire will be lit from last year's cobs.

Smores - Free smores will be served in Library Square from 5:45-6:30 p.m.

Corny Carp Competition - From 6-8 p.m. in North Riverside Park, there will be a carp fishing contest for children 14 and under. Bring your own equipment. Prizes will be awarded. All children must be supervised by an adult and they must use sweet corn for bait (provided). The competition is hosted by the Iowa Lakes Community College Conservation Club.

Friday, Aug. 2

(Please note: In case of rain, Friday activities will be moved inside the MT Vault.)

Family picnic - Starts at 5:30 p.m. on First Avenue North on Library Square. Picnic includes a ribeye steak sandwich, chips and drink for $7.50 a person or hot dog, chips and drink for $5. Hosted by Bank Plus.

Bake sale - From 6-8 p.m. baked goods will be sold by Relay for Life and Grandview Baptist Church.

Sweet cars cruise - From 5:30-8 p.m. the Black Knights Car Club will hold its monthly cruise. The cruise leaves at 7 p.m. for a tour of the community.

Little Miss and Mr. Sweet Corn Pageant - Starts at 6 p.m. on the Library Square stage. The pageant is for children ages 4-8 and is hosted by Envy Salon and Elite Tanning.

Kids games - Starts at 6:45 p.m. in Library Square for children ages 3-12. Hosted by Employees Credit Union.

Esther's Players performance - 7:45 p.m. on center stage in Library Square.

Hula hoop contest - 8 P.M. center stage, Library Square. Prizes will be awarded.

Family comedy show - 8:30, center stage, Library Square. See this new event. Sponsored by Black Knights Car Club.

Fireworks - Starts after dark (approximately 10 p.m.). Sponsored by Iowa Protein Solutions.

Outdoor movie - After the fireworks in Courthouse Square (in case of rain, in the Estherville Public Library). Featuring the film "Brave". Snacks will be provided. Hosted by Steve's Sales & Service.

Corny Comedy Club - MT Vault. 10:30 p.m. showtime. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for presale or $10 at the door. Adults 18 and over. Cash bar available.

Saturday, Aug. 3

Run for the Cob half marathon, 10K, 5K and one-mile fun run - Registration 4-6 p.m. Friday and 7-7:45 a.m. Saturday at the Estherville Public Library. Hosted by Estherville Lincoln Central and Iowa Lakes Community College cross country teams.

Art in the park - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Library Square.

Sweet Corn Days parade - 10:30 a.m. Central Ave. To register, contact Gene at (712) 362-4221. Hosted by Estherville Ambulance.

Food vendors - All day. Town square area.

Free sweet corn - Served from noon until it's gone on North Seventh Street. Hosted by GKN, Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative, Echo Plus Aktion Club, Iowa Lakes Community College and The Andersons.

Sweet cars show - noon to 4 p.m. North Sixth Street. Hosted by Black Knights Car Club.

Inflatable fun - Noon to 4 p.m., Courthouse Square. $1 to $2 a ride/$15 for wristband. Hosted by post prom. Sponsored by Kiwanis.

Barrel train - noon to 4 p.m. corner of First Avenue and North Seventh Street. $1 a ride. Sponsored by Emmet County Animal Shelter.

Mr. Twister - noon to 2:30 p.m. Library Square with a balloon animal performance at 1 p.m.

Karaoke in the Square - noon to 4 p.m. in Library Square. Big Daddy Karaoke.

Antique tractor rodeo - 1 p.m. tractor show, 2:30 p.m. rodeo, United Methodist Church. Watch some tractors with skills.

Corn hole (bean bag) tournament - 2:30 p.m. Thoreson Park. Register at 2 p.m. Two-person team bracket; double elimination. Entry fee $20 a team. Sponsored by Simply Said, Megan Wedebrand.

Water fights - North Seventh Street. 1 p.m. adult fights. Noon to 1 p.m. registration. 3 p.m. kids fights. Hosted by Estherville Firemen's Association.

Duck derby - 3 p.m. Riverside Park. Ducks one for $3 or two for $5. Winning duck wins you $500 in Estherville Bucks. Next five win $100 in Estherville Bucks. Sponsored by Northwest Bank.

Motorcycle fun run - 1 p.m. main start. 11:30 p.m. early start. Starts at Mac's Top Hat and ends at Woody's. $15 entry fee with cash prizes. Hosted by the Emmet County Driftbusters.

Disc golf tournament - 4 p.m. Joe Hoye Park. Pros play two rounds of nine holes for $25. Novices play one round, no fee. Hosted by Wittneben Surveying.

Youth dance - 9 p.m. to midnight, Estherville fire hall. Ages 12-18. Admission $5. Concessions provided by Crossroads Mission Team.

Street dance - 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. North Seventh Street. Admission $5. Must be 21. Hosted by Estherville Rotary.

Sunday, Aug. 4

Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast - 9 a.m. to noon, Duhigg Center. Pancakes, eggs and ham, freewill donation. Proceeds given to charities.

Community worship service - 11 a.m. Library Square. Bring your lawn chairs. Hosted by Estherville Area Ministerial Association.

Des Moines River fun float (subject to river conditions) - 1 p.m. swinging bridge, North Riverside Park. On your own, fun float down the Des Moines River. Meet at the swinging bridge and float together. Participate at your own risk.
