Supervisors pass on BASF building

July 30, 2013
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville Daily News

After making a site visit, the Emmet County Board of Supervisors Tuesday decided to pass on making an offer on the former BASF building northeast of Estherville.

The board had seriously considered buying the property for a county shop since it was out of town and would have made it easier for road crews to get out into the country without having to fight city traffic.

However, secondary roads staff didn't seen too keen in the idea - citing too-small doors and not enough storage space.

It was after paying a visit to the property to study it more closely that supervisors changed their minds.

"There's probably not enough application," board chair Alan Madden said after visiting the property. Madden said an even more urgent need was upcoming repairs to county roads.

"They don't just go slowly when that stuff starts to break up," Madden said, noting that both County N52 and N26 would soon need repairs "That's not up to our standards either," he said of the latter route. "We've got to get by and solve some of these other issues."

Supervisor Jon Martyr agreed.

"I don't think the property (BASF) is a good opportunity for the county. I do think it is a good opportunity for a business." Martyr agreed that the county needs a plan on how it will upgrade roads.

"I want the question answered about what we're going to do about these deteriorating roads," said Madden, noting that money for roads was getting to be less while roads cost more.

Both supervisors Tim Schumacher and Ron Smith said the county could start saving for a new shop. No matter how much a new building would cost, said Smith, the county didn't have the money now.

Supervisor Bev Juhl moved that the board give written notice to BASF that it was declining the company's offer to sell the building, and the board agreed.
