Thumbs up to the city of Estherville for finding two local lawyers to take over duties as city attorney. Thumbs up for Pelzer Law Firm Attorney partners Jennifer Bennett-Finn and Chris Fuhrman stepping up to fulfill those very important duties.

Thumbs up to former Estherville Lincoln Central Football Coach Jerry Schulz. It was announced this week that he will be an Iowa Football Hall of Fame inductee at the end of the 2013 Football Season. Schulz coaches for 27 seasons-the last 20 at Estherville and Estherville Lincoln Central.

Thumbs up to school district residents willing to serve on school boards. It is often a thankless job, but shows an individuals civic sense of duty. Candidates are listed on Page 1 of today's Daily News for the upcoming school board election in September.

Thumbs up for those willing to help honor SSG Steve Blass with a donation for a memorial flag and flag pole at Hoyt Luithly Field. Those who serve and have served in the military deserve our thanks.

Thumbs up to the Iowa Lakes Community College student-athletes and staff who provide community service throughout the school year.

Thumbs down to anyone who can't help the nearby community of Wallingford celebrate its centennial. A 100th birthday only comes around once and the residents of Wallingford and surrounding area have been busy planning the event for the past two years.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Lincoln Central Booster Club and its board who do the legwork in helping ELC student-athletes and coaches maximize their potential on the field of play. Thanks for all that you do.

Thumbs up to the softball and baseball players who earned postseason honors.The individual honors are a reflection of your hard work and success as well as how well as your leadership on and off the field.

Thumbs up to all those who help the Estherville Downtown Market a relaxing venue and gathering place for all ages. From the Downtown Market Committee to the Estherville Excel Arts and Culture Committee (which sponsors various entertainers, to the volunteer entertainers who give of their time and talents. Let's not forget the vendors who provide the fruits of their labors also.

Thumbs down to Mother Nature for teasing us with drops of rain without giving up any significant rainfaill. While the cooler temperatures pose less stress for the crops, we need rain soon!
