Flag to honor SSG Blass

Donations sought to pay for materials

August 9, 2013
Estherville News

In honor of the memory of Estherville hometown hero, SSG Steven Blass and his family, for his ultimate sacrifice to the nation, Estherville and the surrounding areas are once again coming together as a family. SSG Blass died in active duty in Kandahar, Afghanistan on March 11, 2013, in a Black Hawk Helicopter crash.

SSG Blass was an Estherville Lincoln Central School graduate. In an effort to maintain a permanent tribute to SSG Blass, a proposal has been made to raise the necessary funds and purchase and erect a new and larger flagpole, along with a significantly larger American Flag at Hoyt Luithly Field in Estherville. The goal is to have the new 60-foot pole and 20-by-30-foot American Flag in place for dedication at the Estherville Lincoln Central Midgets first home football game on Friday, Sept. 6 at the stadium.

Several local individuals have already volunteered their time and services at no cost to make the necessary preparations for this project to happen. The estimated cost of the pole, flag and materials is $5,000.

Your help is needed to make this project become a reality. Back in March, Estherville and the surrounding communities stepped up to the plate and provided a tribute to our hero, second to none. Residents are asked to do the same again. Please make your tax deductible donations to the Estherville Booster Club and mail to:
