Be cautious drivers as school begins

Classes begins next week for most area schools, which means cars will again have to share roads with busses.

Last year, the state of Iowa passed a new law increasing penalties for those who try to pass illegally.

The bill, known as Kadyn Law, was named after seven-year-old Kadyn Halverson of Northwood, who was struck by a pickup while trying to cross the road to board a school bus in May 2011.

The law increased the criminal penalties for passing a stopped school bus and directed the Iowa Department of Transportation to enact rules that make illegally passing a stopped school bus a serious moving violation that triggers increasing periods of suspension for first, second and subsequent offense.

In August 2012, the Iowa DOT adopted an emergency administrative rule that increases the administrative driving privilege sanctions for illegally passing a stopped bus. A person's Iowa driving privilege will be suspended 30 days for a first conviction, 90 days for a second conviction and 180 days for a third or subsequent conviction.

When approaching the bus from the year, motorists are not permitted to pass the school bus and should be prepared to stop and remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted and the school bus starts moving again.

When meeting the bus from the front, motorists must slow to no more than 20 mph when they see the amber warning lights flashing. Stop in front of the school bus when the school bus stops and its stop arm is extended.

It's also time to be most aware of students walking to and from school early in the morning and in mid-afternoon.

Remember also to watch for students walking to school in the morning and mid-afternoon. For those traveling through Estherville during noon hour Wednesday, also be mindful of students on foot. Estherville Lincoln Central has an early out every week.

Remember safety is everyone's responsibility.
