Welcome new ELC teachers

Besides new principals Shane Kalous and Nathan Essary, 11 new teachers are walking the halls at Estherville Lincoln Central. Here's a brief introduction to each of them.

Eric Francis

Hometown: Pocahontas

Education: University of Northern Iowa, bachelor's degree in teaching all social sciences

Position at ELC: High school social studies: psychology, government, social problems, world studies.

What do like best about working with students? Each day in the classroom is unique. Also, getting to know the students.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? The feeling of a close community-that people are willing to help you if you need something.

Family: Brianne Francis, wife.

Alisha Bernardy

Hometown: Pierre, S.D.

Education: University of Northern Colorado BA in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in English.

Position at ELC: Kindergarten

What do like best about working with students? Every day is new! They are excited about almost everything. They are very honest and straightforward.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? A very warm and welcoming community. I love the river and the state park. It is a safey place to play with my boys.

Family: Luke Bernardy, husband; son Quinn, 4-years-old; son Deacon, 2-years-old

Ian McCloud

Hometown: Spencer, IA

Education: University of Nebraska Lincoln

Position at ELC: Eighth grade earth science

What do like best about working with students? Building relationships with my students is always a pleasure. Getting to know them on an individual level helps me teach and get to understand them better.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? Everyone in town has been super friendly!

Family: Keith and Mary McCloud, parents; Holly McCloud, sister; Sean McCloud, brother.

Elizabeth Schnoes

Hometown: Edgerton, Minn.

Education: Bachelors in Business Education and Accounting from northwestern college, Orange City; Masters in Business Administration from Colorado Technical University.

Position at ELC: Business/computers teacher

What do you like best about working with students? The interaction and growth that you seen and get to be a part of.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? Small community and everyone is very friendly.

Family: Matthew, (son-4 years); Kaylee, (daughter 19 months); Lynea (daughter four months).

Kim Petrich

Hometown: Graettinger

Education: Graettinger-Terril CSD graduated in May 2007; Buena Vista University graduated December 2011; major: English Education; minor: Communication studies.

Position at ELC: High school English/speech teacher

What do you like best about working with students? Everyday is something new! I am looking forward to working with my students and helping them learn and grow into successful, young adults.

What do like about Estherville thus far? Everyone has been very welcoming and friendly! I am very excited to be a part of the ELC community.

Family: I live in Welcome, Minn., with my significant other, Bryan, and our two dogs, Bear and Betty.

Julie Larsen

Hometown: Armstrong

Education: Buena Vista University

Position at ELC: Fifth grade teacher

What do like best about working with students? Each day is something new!. It is amazing when you can help kids learn new concepts and get them excited to learn more.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? The community seems very welcoming to new teachers.

Family: Jon Larsen, father; Lori Larsen, mother; Jennie Larsen, sister

Kyle Steffen

Hometown: Indianola, Iowa

Education: 2012 graduate of Simpson College with a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science, a minor in secondary education. High school 2008 grad of Indianola High School.

Position at ELC: High school social studies teacher with some coaching

What do like best about working with students? I enjoy how through teaching them they challenge me to look at the social sciences in a different way. I enjoy seeing their educational growth throughout the year and seeing their success.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? Since I'm new in town, I have enjoyed meeting new people. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly.

Family: James Steffen, father; Tray Steffen, mother; twin sisters jenny and Jamie Steffen

Andy Umthun

Hometown: Des Moines

Education: BA Education from University of Northern Iowa with a major in physical education and minors in health education and coaching; Dowling Catholic High School graduated 2001

Position at ELC: Head football coach, director of alternative high school, head strength and conditioning coach, middle school track coach

What do like best about working with students? The growth they show throughout the time you get to work with them.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? How nice and welcoming the community has been since I arrived in June.

Kevin White

Hometown: Kingsley-Pierson

Education: Bachelor's degree in elementary education; master's degree in school counseling

Position at ELC: Middle school counselor, freshmen basketball coach, middle school track coach

What do like best about working with students? I enjoy watching them grow and positively progress to reach goals they have set for themselves. I love seeing their excitement and energy when they are passionate about something.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? I really like the warm, small-town welcome and feeling I get when I meet someone new. I also enjoy the strong community feeling between the school and the community. Very positive!

Family: Father Tim White, mother Denis White, older sister Missy,, older brother Chris.

Carly Marx

Hometown: Caledonia, Mich.

Education: Undergraduate: Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich.; graduate: Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Mich.

Position at ELC: K-2 special education and head varsity volleyball coach

What do like best about working with students? I enjoy taking an active part in the growth of our future generations as a whole, but my favorite part is developing relationships with students and being part of their journey of knowledge as they find themselves.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? Every person I have come in contact with has been extremely helpful, friendly and kind. The community has a whole has been welcoming. I feel blessed to be part of such a wonderful place.

Family: Husband Levi Marx, father Walter van Wyngarden; mother Isla Van Wyndgarden; sister Dr. Annalise Van Wyngarden; brother-in-law Dr. Steve Molesa; sister Jenifer Van Wyngarden

Ryan Wurtz

Hometown: Milford

Education: Graduated Okoboji High School in 2009; Wartburg College in 2013

Position at ELC: 3-8 computer applications

What do like best about working with students? Just seeing the growth from the beginning of the year to the end.

What do you like about Estherville thus far? The students and staff are very welcoming and there is such an enthusiasm that is present in the school.
