Sylvia Jane (Cassem) Strube-Poyzer, the daughter of John and Sarah (Anderson) Cassem, was born Feb. 29, 1928, in Swea City.
She attended school in the Swea City schools. Years later in 1974, Sylvia completed her education by obtaining her GED and was very proud of the fact that she graduated at the same time her son, Gary, was graduating from college with his degree.
On June 24, 1951, Sylvia was united in marriage to Gene Strube in Jackson, Minn. The couple made their home in Estherville where they began raising their family. Along with being a homemaker and mom, Sylvia worked outside their home at Butterfield Produce in Estherville, and later was a cook for the Estherville Community School District in an elementary school. She also was employed at Woolworth's Five and Ten at the lunch counter and later at Ben Franklin as a retail clerk. Eventually she went to work for Alco in Estherville and worked in the fabric and men's department of the store until her retirement in 1991. Sylvia also enjoyed working at the I & R Drive Inn in Estherville working for Irma and Russell Agerbeck. Gene passed away March 29, 1988. On Oct. 14, 1989, Sylvia was united in marriage to Donald Poyzer. The couple continued to make their home in Estherville. They enjoyed going camping and square dancing together. Don died Aug. 19, 1998. In her leisure time Sylvia enjoyed going out to eat. Her favorite meal was chicken strips and a baked potato. She also enjoyed visiting Branson, Mo. and enjoyed riding around the Iowa Great Lakes in the Spirit Lake area. She loved crocheting, making afghans, having made one for each of her children and doing jig saw puzzles right up to the time of her death. Most important to Sylvia was spending time with her precious family.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Estherville where she was a circle leader and member of the Presbyterian Women. Sylvia also enjoyed being a member of Estherville Senior Citizens and volunteering her time both there and at Estherville Dinner Date for 12 years.
