Editor's note: Estherville Lincoln Central freshman Bridget Finley swims with the Algona team.
DES MOINES - The Algona Girls Swim Team opened the season at Des Moines Lincoln on Thursday, losing to Lincoln and tying Perry.
"It was a good meet for us" said coach Jim Fisher. "We have 15 girls out this year but 9 new faces. We have 11 freshman and sophomores. Everybody got in the water for 3 or 4 events and I was able to see what they could do. There were a couple of surprises but for the most part it went as expected. We had two main goals, which were to score more than 20 points on Lincoln and we got 37 and beat Perry and we tied them. There were several personal bests also which is good to see.
The junior varsity medley team of Bridget Finley, Cam Shaw, Morgan Lanndorf and Michelle Goodman finished first and Ashlyn Reimers won the JV 50 free.
On the varsity side the medley relay team of Casey Harms, Abby Stroham, Maddie Stubbs and Emma Plathe had a second to Perry, Stubbs had second to Lincoln and Perry. In the 500, Jessica Anderson had a second to Lincoln and first with Perry, while the 200 free relay was second to Lincoln and Perry and Strohman was second to both teams.
"Both Strohman and Harms had personal best times," said Fisher. "It was good for the team as they now know what it is going to take to compete at the high school level."
Next up for the team is Sept. 10 at Boone.
