REMSEN - Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire earned a tough first victory, a 28-20 victory over Remsen-Union on Friday.

The Titans were the only team to score in the first quarter as quarterback Marcus Girres scored on a run with 2:05 in the first quarter. GTRA added the two-point conversion with a run by Kyle Dalen.

Remsen-Union fought back with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Nick Schroeder to Tanner Hilbrands in the third quarter at the 4:33 mark. They tied the game with a two-point conversion.

Girres answered with a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:30 left in the third quarter and the two-point conversion failed.

About 3 minutes into the fourth quarter, Remsen-Union tied the game as Schroeder and Hilbrands connected again for a score on a 40-yard play. Their two-point conversion attempt also failed, as the score was tied 14-14.

But Michael Girres followed with a 68-yard kickoff return with 8:45 on the clock. The two-point conversion run by Marcus Girres made it 22-14.

The Titans got the ball back and ran the clock down and then got an insurance score when Kyle Dalen scored from about 16 yards out with 34 seconds remaining.

But Remsen-Union wasn't down as Schroeder connected with another receiver for 50 yards with 5 seconds left in the game.

The first two-point conversion attempt was negated by a penalty and the Titans held on the second attempt.

The game essentially ended when Remsen-Union kicked the ball out of bounds on the ensuing onside attempt.

GTRA finished with 194 yards on the ground. Dalen had 95 yards on 18 carries, Marcus Girres had 64 yards on 14 carries and Mason McGrauth had 34 yards on 15 carries.

Marcus Girres was 4-of-8 passing 40 20 yards. Dalen caught two passes for 18 yards.

Brian Jacks finished with four sacks. Tyler Hoffman had a fumble recovery. Matt McGrauth led the team with 10 tackles. Dalen had six tackles while Marcus Girres and Mason McGrauth each had five.

GTRA (1-1) hosts Laurens-Marathon in Ruthven for homecoming next Friday.
