Those attending the Estherville Lincoln Central Cross Country Meet on Tuesday saw a very competitive varsity girls' race.
Four teams finished within 15 points of each other with Spencer leading the way with 62 points. Pocahontas Area finished with 64 points, Humboldt finished with 67 and Algona had 77.
Host ELC finished seventh overall with 184 points.
ELC seniors Rachel Bates, Brianna Enerson and Heather Natterstad battle for the position at the start of the cross country meet at the Estherville Golf Course on Tuesday.

Caressa Franklin led the Midgets with a 28th-place finish in 17 minutes, 26 seconds on the 4-kilometer course. Heather Natterstad placed 30h in 17:33 while Rachel Bates placed 39th in 17:59, Vanessa Blanco placed 41st in 18:18 and Hallie Jensen placed 46th in 18:36.
Also Colleen Humble placed 48th in 18:44 and Brianna Enerson placed 54th in 19:22.
"The girls obviously have room to improve and just need to move up in the pack," said ELC coach Tina Burton.
ELC travels to a meet hosted by Ridge View in Holstein Saturday. The Midgets are in Storm Lake on Tuesday.
In the junior varsity race, Taylor Karels paced the Midgets with a 156th place finish in 19:33; Hannah Newton placed 20th in 19:56; Cayli Newton placed 22nd in 20:04; Melissa Gruwell placed 32nd in 21:06; and Emily Slaughter placed 37th in 23:26.
Also, Emilee Olson placed 41st in 23:26 and Jerica Walters placed 42nd in 23:43.
