SHELDON - The Estherville Lincoln Central girls placed solidly in fifth place out of nine teams while the boys placed ninth out of 11 teams at the Sheldon Invitational on Tuesday.
MOC-Floyd Valley won the meet with 32 points. ELC finished with 151 points between Spirit Lake (94 points) and LeMars (169 points).
Heather Natterstad led ELC as she placed 23rd in 17 minutes, 6.90 seconds in the 4-kilometer race. Rachel Bates finished 27th in 17:21 while Vanessa Blanco placed 35th in 17:39.01; Brianna Enerson placed 41st in 17:59.40 and Hallie Jensen placed 43rd in 18:07.45.
Also Taylor Karels placed 44th in 18:09.81 and Colleen Humble placed 54th in 18:25.11.
In the boys' varsity race, Lee Christensen placed eighth and Nic Peters took 17th to pace the Midgets.
Christensen finished the 5-kilometer race in 17 minutes, 0.70 seconds and Peters finished in 17:46.94. Tristan Fales placed 41st in 18:40.07, Drew Condon placed 68th in 20:59.40 and Kevin Dong placed 69th in 21:10.04.
Also Dorde Komlen placed 72nd in 21:53.89 and Isaac Jorgenson placed 75th in 23:44.85.
"We've been talking about starting faster for both the boys and girls," said ELC coach Tina Burton. "Every single (ELC) runner did that tonight and put themselves in a position to be toward the front. We tried something new and I'm glad they did."
In the junior varsity girls' race, Caressa Franklin finished second in 17:23.73, Hannah Newton placed 40th in 19:43.99, Emilee Olson placed 55th in 20:19.59, Melissa Gruwell placed 57th in 20:29.32 and Cayli Newton placed 69th in 21:24.61.
Also Emily Slaughter placed 75th in 22:08.91 and Jerica Walters placed 85th in 23:47.60.
In the junior varsity boys' race, Alex Miller placed 39th in 21:20.56 and Evan Drew placed 66th in 23:42.54.
ELC is at Algona on Monday.
