The Iowa Lakes volleyball team hasn't had much success outside the conference, but the Lakers are now 3-1 in league play after sweeping North Iowa Area Community College on Tuesday.

Iowa Lakes won the first two games relatively easily, 25-18 and 25-20, and then jumped out to leads of 7-1 and 11-5 in the third set.

But the Trojans rallied to tie the match at 15-15.

That's when Laker setter Michelle VanEpps took an opening and pushed the ball to an empty corner to give her team the lead. She then set up Andrea Orth for a kill on the next point. A couple NIACC hitting errors pushed the home team's lead to 20-16. While NIACC made a late run, the Lakers closed out the game with a kill to win the final game 25-22.

Paitton Heltenberg led the Lakers with 13 kills while Orth and Jordan Going each had nine. Shelbie Budmayr had the all-around game with seven kills, three ace serves, three block assists and seven digs.

VanEpps finished with 37 set assists and also a team-high nine digs. Heltenberg also had six digs.

Iowa Lakes (3-11 overall) is at DMACC on Thursday and then at the Johnson County Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Overland Park, Kan.
