Warriors can’t keep pace with Jays

LEMARS - In a shootout with Gehlen Catholic of LeMars, North Union couldn't quite keep pace with the hosts on Friday.

While matching the Jays touchdown for touchdown through three quarters, the Warriors trailed 32-26 because the home team was able to complete their two-point conversions. Gehlen then out-scored North Union 14-0 in the final frame to win 46-26.

The Jays had a balanced attack with 197 rushing yards and 187 through the air.

Cody Runksmeier had a solid night with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. He scored on runs of 40 yards and 52 yards. Runksmeier also caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Aric Runge that made the score 32-26 late in the third quarter.

Jacob Braddock had eight carries for 15 yards including a 4-yard touchdown run. Runge had 45 yards on 10 carries and Trent Pederson had one carry for eight yards.

Runge finished 9-of-16 passing for 149 yards, but also had two interceptions.

Runksmeier finished with three catches for 97 yards. Braddock also had three catches for 33 yards while Kaleb Olson had one catch for 11 yards and Pederson had two catches for eight yards.

Defensively, Eythan Blair had nine solo tackles and five assists; Runge had five solo tackles and three assists; Jake Govern had six solo tackles and five assists and Runksmeier had four solos and three assists.

North Union (0-5 overall) is on the road again next week against Pocahontas Area.
