ALGONA - The Estherville Lincoln Central boys cross country continued to show improvement at the Algona Invitational on Monday.
The Midgets placed 11th out of 15 teams with 284 points.
Lee Christensen paced the Midgets as he finished eighth overall in 17 minutes, 26 seconds on the 5-kiometer course. Nic Peters finished 36th in 18:26 while Tristan Fales placed 66th in 19:54.
"I really feel our top three went out to run the race well," said ELC coach Tina Burton.
Also for ELC, Kevin Dong placed 86th in 21:03 and Drew Condon placed 90th in 21:42 to complete the ELC scoring. Dorde Komlen placed 99th in 22:176 and Isaac Jorgenson placed 106th in 25:34.
In the junior varsity boys' race, Easton Gifford paced ELC as he finished 20:08 in his first meet of the season. Kelly Clabaugh, who was off last week, ran JV and finish in 20:45. Both runners will likely move up to varsity in the next race. Also Evan Drew finished in 22:54 and Alex Miller in 22:56.
The ELC varsity girls ran consistent with their recent times, but the competition was evidently much tougher as ELC finished 13th out of 16 teams with 347 points.
Rachel Bates paced ELC, as she placed 52nd in 17:35 on the 4-kilometer course. Heather Natterstad placed 59th in 17:458, Vanessa Avalos placed 71st in 18:03, Brianna Enerson placed 82nd in 18:33 and Colleen Humble placed 83rd in 18:37 to complete ELC's scoring. Also, Hallie Jensen placed 86th in 18:42 and Taylor Karels finished 92nd in 18:53.
Places were unavailable for the ELC JV girls, but Cayli Newton finished in 20:08, Hannah Newton in 20:30, Emilee Olson in 21:17, Melissa Gruwell in 21:27, Jerica Walters in 23:36, Emily Slaughter in 25:24, Maria Jose Rodriguez in 25:43 and Maddie Moore in 25:57.
Burton said Cayli Newton has continued to improve all year long and become a much better runner.
"She shows what weightlifting can do for a runner," said Burton.
ELC returns to action next Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Eagle Grove.
