Thumbs up to the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce for a great second annual Octoberfest fun run last Saturday at Fort Defiance State Park. Congratulations also go to all the runners who participated. This was a great "break-in" for the Whitetail Ridge Interpretive Trail spearheaded by Gary Phillips, the Friends of Fort Defiance and Phillips' environmental studies students at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Thumbs up also to Tug Helmers who was responsible for most of the work on the trail. Tug went far, far above and beyond and his workmanship was incredible.
Thumbs up to the Estherville Industrial Development Corporation for stepping up and buying the former Sievert's building on South Sixth Street. This is a wonderful example of advancing Estherville's future by embracing its past.
Thumbs up to the Farm Rescue people who helped Chad, Dan and Allison Sorenson harvest their crop this week. Farm Rescue is a wonderful organization that performs miracles.
Thumbs up to the Estherville Good Samaritan Society on its annual benefit dinner Friday night at the Elks Lodge. It was very well attended, which is a testament to the role Good Sam plays in our community.
Thumbs up to everyone who participated in the Healthiest State Walk Wednesday in Estherville. It was good to see so many people demonstrating the importance of health and fitness.
Thumbs down to federal lawmakers who finished a second week of a government shutdown. We will return the favor when you run for reelection.
Thumbs up and congratulations to Casey's for opening their new store at 8 Central Avenue in Estherville. It appears most area residents are stopping to check out the new facility.
