With Halloween behind us, a lot of us are starting to shop for Christmas, or at least starting to think about it.
It used to be that everyone kicked off holiday shopping after Thanksgiving - i.e., Black Friday. But now it seems as soon as the jack-o-lanterns are put away, the wreaths and Christmas lights go up.
So let's all gas up the car and go shopping to . . .
Why not Estherville?
After all, Estherville has just about anything you could went - electronics, clothing, cars, toys - it's all here.
So what do I do with the kids when I'm shopping?
Good question. And the answer is the free merchant movies offered every Saturday during the holiday season.
But I like to grab a bite somewhere between stores.
Well, you're in luck. Estherville has not one but a number of dining establishments specializing in Mexican, oriental and mom-and-pop fare not to mention restaurants featuring great pizzas and Italian food and steaks.
On top of all this, when you spend your money in Estherville, your money stays in Estherville. The rule of thumb, according to retail economists, is that every dollar spent locally turns seven times. When you spend your money locally, you're paying the salaries of the people who serve you. And those salaries could include those of members of your own family.
The sales tax you pay also benefits our local economy. Excel Estherville, which has accomplished many projects right here in town, is funded by the sales tax that not just Estherville residents but that visitors pay as well.
So the choice is clear. Do you want to spend your money out of town or even out of state and help out-of-town or out-of-state communities? Or do you want to help your local community.
Shopping locally isn't just a saying. It's an action. So, please. Shop locally this holiday season and help your community - and yourself.
