Thumbs up, thumbs down

November 15, 2013
Estherville News

Thumbs up to all the people who put a whole lot of effort into the Veterans Day programs around Emmet County this past Monday. They included North Union High School in Armstrong which held an impressive observance with selections by the North Union High School concert band and choir and presentation of area veterans, Estherville Good Samaritan Society and Rosewood Manor which both paid special honor to their veterans, Iowa Lakes Community College, and those who participated in observances at the World War I monument in Library Square. A special thank-you has to go to the teachers who brought their students to Library Square. Learning about the sacrifices of our veterans is a very important part of every student's education, and by bringing their students, these educators showed the highest degree of compassion and professionalism.

Thumbs up to the Ringsted City Council when it made a hard decision Monday night and decided not to ban pit bulls in the city. Instead, the council will look at dog ownership on a case-by-case basis.

Thumbs up to Echo Plus for hosting Business After Five Tuesday night. This organization provides a very important service to our area. The dedication of the people who work there is absolutely outstanding.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Historical Society which held its annual meeting Friday night. The Society has done wonders with the Emmet County Historical Museum just across from Iowa Lakes Community College. One stellar example is the newly restored Brujeld cabin. Emmet County simply could not afford to pay a museum staff to do what these dedicated volunteers do - not just during the summer but throughout the year.

Thumbs down to scammers. An Estherville Chamber member reported receiving a call this week from someone claiming to be with Merchant Supply Tier 1, The caller asked for bank statement information. Please be aware of this situation and take care in who you give your information to.

Thumbs up to the all-conference volleyball honorees listed in today's Estherville News. It takes hard work and talent to make these elite squads. A special congratulations to the academic all-conference honorees. It takes discipline to schedule school work and extracurricular activities.
