Thumbs up, thumbs down

Estherville News

Thumbs up to area teams competing in the First Lego League competition last Saturday at Iowa Lakes Community College. Locally, the Spirit Lake Techno Indians go on to state and the Estherville Elks Autobots did a great job on their first time in the competition. Here's hoping it's a bigger and better competition next year.

Thumbs up to the Many Voices Choir on a great concert last Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with a wonderful intermission performance by the Estherville Lincoln Central fifth through eighth grades. We are indeed fortunate to have such fine performers in our community - and at all ages.

Congratulations have to go to Iowa Lakes Community College music students for their fine performance at the Madrigal Dinner at the Estherville VFW. These young people were truly entertaining, complete with skits and jokes along with their music. What an asset to our community.

Thumbs up to ELC High School choir and concert band members who entertained last Sunday at Roosevelt Auditorium. They gave a wonderful performance that was heartwarming despite the frigid weather.

Thumbs up to Latino members of the St. Patrick's Catholic parish who presented a wonderful celebration at the Our Lady of Guadalupe festival last Sunday. This is a wonderful and festive tradition that embraces elements of the Native Mexican culture and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thumbs up to the Knights of Columbus for their generous donation Tuesday to Echo Plus of proceeds from their annual Tootsie Roll drive to help benefit Echo Plus. The Knights would also like to thank community businesses and individuals who made the drive a success.

Thumbs up to Iowa Lakes Community College students who gave a wonderful performance at the winter recital Wednesday. You are all virtuosos, in our book.

Thumbs up to the Gerdes family - Nancy, Hannah and Nicole - for their great performance Wednesday at the Estherville Good Samaritan Society. Your son and brother, Isaac, is and should be very proud of all of you.

Thumbs up to Estherville fifth through eighth graders on a great concert Thursday night at Roosevelt - the second within a week. Your performances show why music and the arts are essential to a well-rounded education.
