ELC posts 2-1 record at Greene County Tourney
JEFFERSON - Oscar Ramirez notched his 100th career victory on Saturday in the second of his three matches at the Greene County Tournament.
Ramirez, ranked second at 132 pounds in Class 2A, needed just two victories to reach the milestone.
During Midgets' dual against Greene County, the ELC senior defeated Jordan Challen 9-4. Challen is ranked eighth at 138 pounds in Class 2A.
Ramirez' milestone victory came with a pin over South Central Calhoun's Ashten Halvorsen in 1:15. Ramirez finished the day by pinning Norwalk's Zack Johnston in 4:27. Johnston is ranked 10th at 138 pounds in Class 3A.
As a team, ELC also fared well in the tournament. The Midgets defeated Greene County 39-34 and SCC 42-30 before taking on Norwalk.
The Class 3A school proved a tougher challenge as the Warriors won 52-24.
"After defeating SCC and Green County, it put us in positions to win the tournament," said ELC coach Dan Hewitt. "I wanted to try the best way to get points and moved many wrestlers up a weight. I'm not sure how it would have turned out if I hadn't put our guys in a tough situation. But wrestling is about being put into tough situations and then getting out of them."
Chase Bonner was the only other ELC wrestler to post a 3-0 record on the day.
The junior 220-pounder had a tough match against South Central Calhoun's Rylan Richardson, earning a 3-2 victory.
But he finished the day with a couple of first-period pins at heavyweight as he defeated Greene County's Rene Guzman in 1:25 and Norwalk's Ryan Kennedy in 1:02.
Four other ELC wrestles posted 2-1 records.
At 106 pounds, freshman Zackary Snyder pinned SCC's Cody Smith in 1:35 and then received a forfeit from Green County before losing by technical fall, 15-0 to Norwalk's Dylan Lane.
At 113 pounds, Joel McCoy received two forfeits and lost by fall to Norwalk's Dylan DeFreece.
Thomas Bortvit pinned SCC's Cody Shumacher in 1:09 at 145 pounds, lost at that weight 12-0 to Greene County's Tommy Bradshaw and then pinned Norwalk's Casey Rudolf in 2:57 at 152 pounds.
Blake Gjerde had a similar day as he pinned SCC's Caleb Maquire in 2:40 and lost by fall to Greene County's Jeremy Scheuermann in 3:26 at 152 pounds. At 160 pounds, Gjerde pinned Norwalk's Jesse Cowle in 5:28.
Cole Budach, )138), Kelly Clabaugh (160/170), Billy Snyder (170/172), Austin Egeland (182/195) and Jake Bortvit (195/220) all went 1-2 on the day.
Easton Gifford (120) and Myles McDonald (126) both went 0-3 while Brenden Duer (145) was 0-1.
"Our freshman our still growing," said ELC coach Dan Hewitt. "Zack Snyder had a good day while Myles McDonald had a rough day, but I think he learned more about himself.
"Conditioning has hurt us the first couple days and we'll work on that along with some other things."
